BlackPond Marine Consultants was formed in 2007 by Joe Akacich (Black Joe). An AMSA Accredited Marine Surveyor, Joe has been involved in the marine industry since joining the RAN in 1976.
In the late 90’s Joe and his family moved to South East Queensland where he formed “Blackline Shipping” and rebuilt the 118′ catamaran “Myway” which had been devastated by fire. Blackline Shipping became one of the most successful refit and repair specialists on the East Coast.
Joe sold Blackline Shipping in 2006 and after a year of consulting to the new owners he formed BlackPond Marine Consultants.

Joe has been a diver in Salvage, laying moorings and other tricky jobs on the seabed around the Whitsunday Islands, involved in the building of Hamilton Island Marina, was employed by Keith Williams as engineer on “Achilles I” at a time Achilles I was one of the original Australian “White Boats” and he skippered “Southern Cross II” for Alan Bond in the late 80’s.
Joe was also instrumental in overseeing the building of the reef pontoon facility “Reef World” at Hardy Lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef, has been Marina Manager and then the Services Manager of Hamilton Island Resort and oversaw the implementation of the desalination plant, which supplies all of Hamilton Island Resort’s fresh water supply.
Joe is also an avid sailor and has completed many Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races and been a member of the winning crew twice, the most recent being in 2013 on board the maxi yacht “Investec Loyal”
