The Boat Works 1000

In just four years, motor racing legend and twice Bathurst 1000 winner, Tony Longhurst has led his team of marine professionals at The Boat Works to become the country’s busiest and most reputable boat yard with 200 boats onsite at any one time.

The full complement of staff, tenants and contractors now numbers 1000 – a fortuitous reminder of his racing achievements as Tony gears up for another crack at The Mountain. In February 2018, Tony will take on Mount Panorama in a brand-new BMW M4 GT4 in the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour.

“We are anticipating the BMW M4 GT4’s arrival from Germany very soon. The first thing is to get through the Bathurst 12 Hour and then the Gold Coast will see it in use as a promotional vehicle for The Boat Works.”

Tony’s other passions include his two performance catamarans – the Extreme 40 which has enjoyed plenty of success on the circuit, and his current family cruiser, the 19.5-metre carbon fibre Schionning, Kato.

But his main focus is the constant evolution of the offering at The Boat Works, which now occupies 23 acres, the largest and cleanest boatyard in Australia. The Boat Works is a resort style yard that is the most efficient of its kind anywhere, largely due to the enthusiasm of its team.

“We now have 1,000 people on site every day – sometimes more,” says General Manager, Shane Subichin. “The yard has expanded to maximum space to accommodate demand, and still the boats keep coming. Our tenants are the best in the business and it’s a one-stop-shop for all your boating needs. We think it’s a nice place to come for a coffee, lunch or cocktails as well.”

The Galley Restaurant & Bar has just undergone a major revamp and is under new management, with a delectable menu, fantastic water aspect from the nautical themed establishment. Open every day from 6.30am to 5pm, Saturday till late, it’s a great venue for a business lunch, sunset drinks or a special celebration.

If you own a boat, The Boat Works cares for it like it’s their own. Tenants onsite are experts in upholstery and stainless steel, shipwrights, mechanical and electrical engineers, sandblasting, surveyors, watermakers and desalination equipment, chandlery, safety gear, electronics and refrigeration, signage, graphics and project managers.

As well as accommodating vessels of every size for repairs, maintenance and major refits, The Boat Works is home to new and pre-owned boat dealers, including Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Ocean Alexander and Grand Banks, multihull brands such as Lagoon, Catana, Sunreef Yachts, Fountaine Pajot, Privilège, NEEL, Hudson and Schionning, as well as SACS RIB tenders, Bayliner and more.
Owners and Captains can deal direct with businesses for any job, from anti-fouling to complete refits, or assign a Project Manager to handle the entire project.
The surrounding Coomera precinct is unique in its proximity to manufacturers, suppliers and contractors, meaning further cost-savings for clients and quicker turn-around times.

Word of mouth referral from hundreds of satisfied customers, thrilled with The Boat Works’ cost-effective, professional five-star service has generated a wave of response from interstate boaters heading north for the winter and south again for the summer – calling in to The Boat Works for all their requirements to keep their pride and joy in top condition. The Boat Works has 50 covered controlled work areas to ensure boats are protected and work runs to schedule, rain, hail or shine.

“With up to 50 boats a week arriving we have consistent work for all trades that has created full-time employment which has resulted in the cream of tradesmen permanently on site,” says Shane. “We are proud to be the best value yard in Australia because of volume and we won’t be beaten on price or service.”

Equipment includes the 100 Tonne marine Travel Lift that carries boats up to 110-feet with a beam of 26-feet, a 70 Tonne travel lift and a 45 Tonne hydraulic submersible Sealift which is ideal for the wide-beam catamarans that ply the waters between Melbourne and Sydney on their way to the sunny cruising grounds of north Queensland.

Adding to its complement of 35 Refit screened sheds are four Prestige Supersheds up to 15-metres in height and can accommodate boats up to 36.5-metres (110-feet), which means no holdups booking space and if work runs overtime, no pressure to relocate.

There is also a new undercover hardstand area, offering true all-weather work environments and a dedicated hardstand storage facility for vessels up to 110-feet.

The team at The Boat Works is known for going that “extra mile” in every aspect, such as concierge, customer lounge, courtesy cars, barbeque facilities, laundries and ensuites for visiting boaters. “We have been blown away by our customers’ feedback,” says Shane. “Everybody here gives 100 percent every day. We are all boaters ourselves, so it’s a pleasure to go to work. It’s nice to be rewarded by return clients who refer their friends.”
