Trial to float Melbourne’s love of food on Yarra River

Parks Victoria is offering a unique business opportunity for the provision of a floating food and beverage businesses as part of a new trial on the Yarra River over summer aimed at testing new opportunities to boost Melbourne’s connection with the Yarra River. 

The trial will test the viability of floating food and beverage services on the Yarra River for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks between November 2017 and February 2018.

Graeme Davis, A/Director Marine and Maritime, Parks Victoria said “The Yarra River is central to Melbourne’s liveability. Considering the viability of contemporary and innovative approaches to on-water activation will enhance the diversity of opportunities for the community to engage with the Yarra River”.

“Parks Victoria is working to ensure that we support the growth of Melbourne’s visitor economy by exploring activation opportunities on the Lower Yarra River” Davis added.

Three CBD locations have been selected for the trial where stationary floating infrastructure can be installed safely with minimal disruption to boating traffic on the river. The proposed locations are:

    •    Sandridge Wharf (Southbank)
   •    Flinders St Landing
   •    Botanic Gardens Landing

The trial will consider opportunities that profile the Yarra River as a world class waterfront offering locals and visitors a quality visitor experience and enhance Melbourne’s reputation as the food capital of Australia. Opportunities for businesses to submit proposals to Parks Victoria opened on 14 August.
