Laafin – Punching well above their weight

3 August 2010

The yacht Laafin, a Currawong 30, skippered by Kon Cili is gearing up to make, what has become, an annual trek from Newhaven, on Phillip Island in Western Port, around to Docklands in Port Phillip, to take part in the annual Variety Splash. This will be the fourth ‘Splash’ for Team Laafin who, over the last three years has raised over $28,000 for Variety, The Children’s Charity.

The annual Variety Splash, a three day boat rally around Port Phillip Bay, raises money for children in our community with special needs. Entries are again open for the event to be held next February and, as usual, one of the first entries received by the organizers is from Laafin, the smallest boat in the fleet for the last three years.

The Variety Splash is similar in style to the Variety Bash where the emphasis is firmly placed on having fun, but as with all Variety events, there is a serious side. The Splash raises money for children in our community with special needs and last year raised over $150,000.

Next February a new course will take Splashers from Docklands to Queenscliff, then on to Mornington and finishing up at Sandringham on day three. Organisers have a host of fun activities planned for along the way, and at each of the destinations.

According to Kon Cili, Team Laafin has already secured sponsorship of $6,000 with their ultimate aim being to exceed the $10,300 the team raised in 2009. Last year they narrowly missed beating their own record by $120 so this year they have set themselves a challenge.

“We’re always on the lookout for new sponsors” said Kon. “Our thanks to A.F.T., Beachfront B & B, K.C. Tai-Chi Learning, Professionals Real Estate San Remo, Navigator Print, Fantech, A Van Caravan, Specialist Termite Control, Dwellings the Property Repairs Specialist.
