Great Racing – Big Spectacle

23 June 2010

July 4th, 2010 is going to be a very big day for Australian yacht racing.

Firstly, Australia’s longest Category One ocean race, the 1885nm (3500km) Melbourne to Vanuatu gets underway. The fleet will start off the Portsea Pier at 11:30am EST and make their way through Port Phillip Heads before turning East to head off to the tropics.

Secondly, the Melbourne Winter Series gets underway at the top end of Port Phillip. Since 1971, the ORCV’s much-loved MWS begins at 09:30am EST with the year’s only Port of Melbourne and Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved practice firing of rocket flares. Racing begins at 10:30am EST in the area East of the main shipping channel, adjacent to Brighton.
