Going green for bluer waters

Bellingham Marine - the largest marina manufacturer in Australia - has taken the lead and embraced the Marina Industries Association Low Carbon Marina Initiative.

Andrew Barton, of the Carbon Reduction Institute, gave Bellingham’s Brisbane manufacturing facility the ‘green’ light on 16 June, 2008.

By participating in the program, Bellingham will reduce the impact their operations have on the environment. This co-operative initiative will contribute to an anticipated 20% reduction in overall greenhouse levels from the marina industry by 2015.

Bellingham Marine General Manager, John Spragg said:

”For the past 50 years Bellingham has supported many initiatives to protect the environment. We have been heavily involved in a number of investigations proving that the building of marinas does not adversely impact on water quality or marine life, in fact, it has been shown marinas enhance the ‘in water environment’.

Now we see the emerging climate change threat of enormous significance to the marina industry, and the planet for that matter. I have never been to an ugly place where a marina has been built, they are generally built in stunning locations, and these treasures need to be preserved for many future generations to come.

I was pleasantly surprised to read a technical report that showed the concrete we use in production of our marina systems is actually one of the very lowest CO2 products used in construction, absorbing CO2 during its lifetime due to a process called Carbonation.”

Bellingham are excited to now be able to reduce and offset a certain percentage of their operational greenhouse gas emissions and provide customers with a carbon neutral choice at the point of sale.

By taking part in the low carbon initiative, Bellingham is able to pass on carbon credits received, directly to customers, thereby helping them to reduce their carbon footprint. Along with improving the environment, Bellingham is also able to save customer’s money.

John commented “We all need to ensure our environment is improved for those who follow us, and we see the reduction of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere a project for each and every one of us.

I sincerely hope our competitors in the marina manufacturing industry follow our lead”.
