Deadliest Catch faces harshest winter yet

11 July 2012

Discovery Channel’s top rating, reality TV series, Deadliest Catch, taking viewers along with a fishing fleet as they venture out to catch crab in some of the wildest oceans in the world, returns for a brand new season marking its 100th episode. Premiering exclusive to Discovery Channel on Wednesday August 15 at the new time of 7.30pm (AEST) Deadliest Catch .

This season all the big names are back, but with a twist, slashed crab quotas will have the captains reeling before the boats even hit the water. With the fleet set to fight over half the catch each skipper is forced to decide: roll the dice on the depleted Red grounds or risk it all to hunt the elusive Alaskan Blue Crab. Captains are faced with choices of strategy and tactics as the competition heats up for what promises to be the most exciting season yet.

Bonds of family and friendship are also tested. Seabrooke skipper Junior has begrudgingly re-hired little brother Chris “Whipper” Welch but will he regret giving him a second chance? Will Captain Elliot’s (Rambin’ Rose) new engineer and longtime buddy Aaron Steiner, be better served as a friend than a crew member? And will Keith’s latest short-lived deckhand confirm him forever as the failure of the Bering Sea?

Decks are shuffled this season as Josh and Jake Harris make a tough and emotional decision to leave their late fathers’ legacy the Cornelia Marie in port and join rival ships. Jake Harris joins the crew of the Northwestern, quickly learning Captain Sig’s golden rule, there’s a right way, there’s a wrong way and then there’s the Norwegian way. And Josh Harris struggles to learn ‘the Hillstrand way’ as the newly minted deckhand of the Time Bandit.

Early in the season reality hits hard on the Time Bandit, big fishing gives way to heavy hearts as the crew farewell a fallen friend.

This season, the boats endure the harshest weather conditions any of them have ever experienced in more than a 25 years of fishing.  As the storm of the century nears the fleet, it’s a race against time to haul in their gear before the treacherous arctic hurricane hits.

The captains are faced with the tough decision, take their crew to safety or hold their position and hit the mother lode.  Lives will be endangered and lessons will be learned in what really is the most dangerous job in the world.
